چکیده

We point out a non-trivial connection between the model proposed by Hořava and Keeler as a candidate for noncritical M -theory and the Gross-Neveu model with fermionic fields obeying periodic boundary conditions in 2+ 1 dimensions. Specifically, the vacuum energy of the former is identified with the large-N free-energy of the latter up to an overall constant. This identification involves an appropriate analytic continuation of the subtraction point in noncritical M -theory, which is related to the volume of the Liouville dimension. We show how the world-sheet cosmological constant may be obtained from the Gross-Neveu model. At its critical point, which is given in terms of the golden mean, the values of the vacuum energy and of the cosmological constant are 4/5 and 2/5 of the corresponding values at infinite string coupling constant. We discuss a connection between M -theory and the Gross-Neveu model with fermionic fields obeying periodic boundary conditions in 2 + 1 dimensions. In the large-N limit, the latter may be obtained from the former in the limit of vanishing volume of the Liouville dimension. We show how the world-sheet cosmological constant may be obtained from the Gross-Neveu model. At its critical point, which ...

Lee-Yang edge singularity in the three-dimensional Gross-Neveu model at finite temperature

We discuss the relevance of the Lee-Yang edge singularity to the finite-temperature Z2-symmetry restoration transition of the Gross-Neveu model in three dimensions. We present an explicit result for its large-N free-energy density in terms of ζ(3) and the absolute maximum of Clausen’s function. The Gross-Neveu model in d = 3 dimensions provides a remarkable example of a second order temperature...

Physics of the gauged four fermi model in (1 + 1) dimensions

Solvable models have greatly contributed to our understanding of the dynamics of quantum field theories. Two such (1 + 1)–dimensional models solvable in the large N limit which are “classics” in this regard, are the ’t Hooft model [1], gauge theory with fermionic matter, and the Gross–Neveu model [2], a model with a four fermi coupling. (For reviews on the subject, see, for instance, [3].) Both...

Dynamics of the chiral phase transition in the (2+ 1)-dimensional Gross–Neveu model

The phase diagram of the Gross–Neveu (GN) model in 2+ 1 dimensions as a function of chemical potential and temperature has a simple curve separating the broken symmetry and unbroken symmetry phases, with chiral symmetry being restored both at high temperature and high density. We study, in leading order in the 1/N expansion, the dynamics of the chiral phase transition for an expanding plasma of...

The Perturbative Gross Neveu Model Coupled to a Chern-Simons Field: A Renormalization Group Study

In 2+1 dimensions, for low momenta, using dimensional renormalization we study the effect of a Chern-Simons field on the perturbative expansion of fermions self interacting through a Gross Neveu coupling. For the case of just one fermion field, we verify that the dimension of operators of canonical dimension lower than three decreases as a function of the Chern-Simons coupling.
